Shattered Joints

As you all may have heard, August broke his foot yesterday.  Actually, more than broke- I should say Shattered.  He was riding his dirt bike like any other day on a track and was in the whoops section when all of a sudden his sprocket broke off the rear hub.  This then got caught up in the back tire and completely stopped the bike dead in it's track.  August went flying and the bike came after him.  He was fine when he hit the ground until the bike came and smacked into his heel causing his toes to bend backwards toward his shin.  Luckily he had his sturdy medal brace on to support his ankle which only caused the toes to basically bend backward, not the entire foot- thank goodness.  This is his bad ankle- you know the one with screws and scars...Anyways, I was just sitting here waiting for him to get home to go out to eat with some friends when I get the call..."Melissa, I broke my foot- let's go to the hospital."  I was like, "No you didn't babe, come home, we are going to dinner, you're fine."  I'm mean, I know- I never believe him when he's hurt.  He said "No, I'm really hurt, the boys are bringing me home and we are going to the ER."  Well, that was that, and off we went.  His foot does not look bad at all- no broken skin, hardly any swelling, just the big toe looked a little crooked... So I of course assumed again- babe- you're fine- suck it up.  I feel terrible now.

We get to Banner Gateway's ER last night at 6:15 pm and they evaluate his pain and give him a pain pill.  They offered him a shot of instant pain relief but he refused- no needles!  LOL.  So about 2 hours later they finally get an x-ray of the foot.  The x-ray tech just kind of gave him a look and said, "Um, I'm not suppose to say anything or diagnose, but this is really bad..."  Great...Another hour goes by, no word from anyone.  Then my parents show up.  His dad and mine give him a Priesthood Blessing.  I love blessings...Finally the PA comes in and says she has a Pediatrist on his way to check out the x-rays and that so far it does NOT look good at all...The doc finally shows around 10:00 pm.  It turns out we know the guy.  August and I were both his patients in high school for several foot related problems.  He shows us the x-rays and he is just flabbergasted and confused and just talking to himself thinking out loud, trying to determine what can be done with poor August's foot.  There were so many shattered pieces of bone sticking out here and there from every metatarsal- And the big toe is just "mush".  He was throwing the ideas of "wires" or "pins here and there" etc.  He called August "Humpty Dumpty" and that he can not figure out how to put him back together again.  He apparently shattered all the metatarsal phalangeal joints and more.  If he went into surgery last night, he was afraid that when he opened it up that all the bones in the toe would just crumble in his hands and he wouldn't know where to begin...We could tell he was not confident nor willing to work on August.  He admitted that because he knew us so well as friends it would be hard to work on him.  So he got on the phone with colleges and found a specialist that will hopefully take on the challenge.  August goes in to see him tomorrow for an evaluation.  Also we will try another doc in Phx for a possible second opinion.  According to the doc last night, we have a two week window to operate.  So for now, we wait... We wait to see who can think of how to put this all back together and for it to be able to function properly.  No doubt, he will have instant arthritis from now on in this foot.  Let's just pray that he will be able to walk soon.

Last night we finally got home around midnight and got him into bed.  Poor August woke up in so much pain around 2:30 am.  He was dying!  I have never heard him hurt this bad...I feel so bad for him.  I just hope and pray that everything turns out ok and that somehow they will be able to fix his foot.  The doc guessed for now that it will be at least 12 weeks of healing at this point.  That means crutches maybe? We aren't sure, but more than likely yes.  Reed is due in only 11 more weeks and maybe earlier if he comes early.  He will meet his daddy on crutches...Oh man, with my C-section we will both be down and out when the baby is here... anyways.  Pray for August!  Thank you.  Sorry for such a long post.  Just thought you would be interested in the story...And of course, a belly shot and my sunburn...I am getting BIG!
