These are the x-rays taken at the ER Saturday night. It's hard to tell what's broke if you haven't had a doctor to explain, but I will try. What is shattered is the metatarsal phalangeal joints. Which if you look at the little balls under the joint you will notice little white flex of bones sticking out everywhere off the balls- that's not normal. And the big toe is just "Mush". Pretty much in like seven or eight pieces possibly more. The screws in the ankle are from when he shattered that when he was sixteen.
August got hurt last Saturday. This pic is on Monday night. Notice a little more swelling and the blister on top of foot.
Shortness of big toe and green and red bruising on the bottom of right foot.
More swelling and big toe looks way crooked.
Definitly more bruising (green).
And here I am, the photographer- sorry some pics are blurry and such. I'm still learning the settings on this new camera.
And here is Aug after surgery Thursday evening. Result- 4 pins. Three in the big toe, and one through the second toe.
The one through the second toe is lower on top of the foot so it's not visible with this shoe on. This week has been hell. Monday we went to a Pediatrist that was referred to us by the doc at the ER Saturday night. He took his own x-rays along with looking at the x-rays taken at the ER and was nervous. Just like the ER doc, he did not know how he would put this foot back together again...He was thinking out loud also deciding what could possibly be done with all the tiny bones shattered. I don't think he knew it was this complicated before we went in. He was talking about cutting August's foot with like a 4 in + incision and then seeing where to go from there...We weren't too confident in this doc. He unwrapped the big splint August had on. We then noticed a huge red spot on top of his foot- it started swelling before our eyes and raised into a huge bubble. It was strange. We told him that this was new and not there Saturday night. The doc felt a hard lump in the red dot and said it was old arthritis from his ankle injury. Uh NO- I don't think so. I told him, no way- this is new. He said, "Oh, well maybe it's a tendon that snapped." He did an ultrasound on the foot and then sent us for an MRI just to double check. $500 for the MRI, I might add...He said alright, come back to me next week- not sure if he wanted to do surgery on August or not... So my mom talked to a PA in her ward who knew of a great surgeon in Phx that specialized only on feet. We gave him a call for a second opinion. This guy is an Orthopedic Surgeon who only works on feet! Yey- good news, we got in Wednesday for a consult. He knew exactly what to do. He says he specializes in trauma to the feet and would get August in for surgery the next day. Excellent. He said this would be a major challenge, but that he liked a challenge. He also said that he would not have to make any incisions and that he would try to do the surgery with pins only from the outside. He would maneuver the bones with the pins until they were in position and alignment and that the pins would stay in the foot for 6 weeks. So that was what he did. However you will notice the second toe all bloody- he tried going in from the top of the second toe but because that one was too damaged, he had to make a small incision on top of the foot near the red spot and push the pin upward the other way. Ugh- all this makes me sick. Now I think August's toe looks like a push pin with the pins sticking out of it...yuck! The surgeon did a tremendous job. August will be off his feet on crutches for 6 weeks till the pins come out and then another 6 weeks in this little shoe (maybe on crutches still). And then overall, about a 1 year recovery for total movement and normality again. As for the MRI- Pointless per the surgeon- he says there was no tendon that snapped, and that it was just a sore from being wrapped up in the splint too tight the night at the ER. I asked, "So pretty much I just wasted $500 on nothing?" "Yep!" Ugh...I guess it's better to be safe than sorry right...? August is on a lot of pain killers- he hates the pain- it hurts so bad! He said he can feel all the pins rubbing against his muscles inside the toes...He needs visitors people! Stop by whenever you would like- he is going back to work Monday (hopefully). He just has to carpool and keep his foot propped up all day. But feel free to come by in the evenings! Here are his pins- that are holding the bones in place for healing- the doc just cut the ends off the sticks and put the little balls on the end...nasty huh!
And here's a pic of my belly growing every day! It is getting huge! 10 more weeks! I start week 29 Monday! And I am moved up to 39 weeks delivery for C-section instead of the whole 40 weeks- maybe even sooner, who knows. I hope I don't get THAT big...
I look too big as it is!

Holy crap!!! I guess I didnt realize it was that intense!
Wow, I am sorry this week was so horrible! Good thing you found the orthopedic surgeon, it definitely sounds like he knew what he was doing.
Your belly is super cute! The 3rd trimester is when he will grow the most, so your belly will get a lot bigger (which is a good thing) :).
poor guy hope the healing goes fast. i'm sure he'll be happy to go back to work just to be doing something.
I love your cute stomach! It always looks so much cuter on other people. Poor August, that really stinks. It is going to be hard when Reed comes, so hopefully August will be feeling much better.
That is quite a story. A sad one! Hope he heals quickly!
